IVF Ectopic Pregnancy

We recently went through an embryo transfer using an egg that was from a donor. I was started on progesterone/estrogen injections and oral prometrium. At 12 days post transfer I had a beta of 8. My RE said that although that was not considered negative, he had never seen one go up, and so they considered it a failed transfer. He told me to stop all my meds and that I would start a period within 7-10 days. On day 7 I had something of a period, but very unusual. I bled heavily for about 2 hours and then stopped completely for about 12 hours, then just have had very light spotting since then. On Friday, which would be 23 days post transfer I was scheduled for a saline infusion ultrasound. Just to be sure I wasn't pregnant, I took two hpt's and they both came up positive. My RE ran another beta and it was 41. He believes I MIGHT be having an ectopic but really has no idea. He told me to come in again on Tuesday to get another beta and after my nuding, he said I could start the oral prometrium again if it would make me feel better, but not to worry with the injections. My question is: Could I have actually been pregnant with an increasing beta and because I discontinued the prometrium/estrogen, could that have terminated a possible viable pregnancy? Obviously, that was given to me to support a pregnancy so it seems to me stopping it could very well terminate a pregnancy. Obviously, my beta was going up and we'll never know how high it may have actually gotten as we weren't testing it. Thank you
