Re: How should cysts be monitored at age 46? Dr. please replyFrom: Curious (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 15 Apr 2003 06:02:36 -0500 (CDT)
Are you still menstruating? I'm post menopause so we're probably not in the same boat. Do you know what "type" of cyst? In my case I have a simple cyst (functional cyst) on one ovary that is 5cm. This is the least worrisome type of cyst. 4cm is the "usual" maximum size prior to a surgical recommendation for my age. However, the head of the gyn/onco dept at a major teaching hospital and a local gyn/onco are comfortable up to 8cm as long as no symptoms bothering me with a "wait and watch" approach with ultrasounds at 3 mos, 3 mos, 6 mos, 6 mos and annually thereafter as long as it doesn't increase in size or cause symptoms and stays a simple cyst. Hopefully, you understand the limitations of the CA-125 test. You really do need to sit down with your gyn and have a good talk and your questions answered. Plus a referral to a good gyn/onco for his recommendation to ease your mind and ensure a good second opinion. Something as scarey to you as this deserves a good second opinion.
