birth control and changing hormones?

I need advice. I am currently taking Alesse 28 for PMS, irregular periods, and as a birth control method. I got married a year ago, and it seems that something has changed because I've noticed weight gain and breast tenderness in the last year. Last month I stopped taking the Alesse to see what would happen, and I instantly came out of a depression, lost some weight, and had no more breast tenderness (it was becoming unbearable!). I've had the most confusing and embarrassing outbursts of anger, irritation, crying, etc, that I suspect are hormonal, and it seems that I have it under control by not taking the pill.

Since then, I asked my doctor if there was something better for me, and it became very clear very quickly that I was not getting the advice I need. I explained that the Alesse seemed to cause side effects, and she recommended Orthotri-cyclen. Right. It has 15mcg more estrogen in it, which, if I'm not mistaken, is the cause of weight gain, breast tenderness, and other side effects.

Can I hope to get better advice here? I'm searching for something that will relieve the side effects I had with Alesse. I've read about the mini-pill, but it seems a little risky. Is there any other combination pill that has less hormone than Alesse?

Thanks in advance . . . this forum is a godsend for women's unspoken needs and questions!
