Not a doc but......yes it is necessary and very common. They do a lot of work while doing the hysterectomy and the bowel is moved around a lot. Believe it or not they need the space to work in, and if the bowel is nicked it could cause an infection. A good support site to go to is http://www.hystersisters.com
