Sue, It is very common to have a bowel prep for a hysterectomy. There is a lot of work to be done during the hysterectomy and it is possible for the bowel to get nicked, especially if it is full. Cleaning out the bowel will help prevent infection. Also, from somebody who had a hysterectomy in October, it takes a while after the anesthesia to get your bowels moving again and it is actually a blessing to have a "clean" system. For support on the hysterectomy try going to http://www.hystersisters.com no docs there but there are a bunch of women who have had or are having hysterectomies, you can get a lot of support there. Good Luck!
