Not a doc but my guess is the easiest way to get Herpes Type I on the genitals is through oral sex with somebody that has it. I don't know how long the virus lives but I suppose it is possible to spread if you touch a fever blister and then touch your genitals, somebody please let me know if this would be a factor or not. I think the main factor in genital outbreaks would be the same as oral outbreaks, stress, being run down or being sick. You can also pass on the virus to another partner.
