Causes of Herpes Type I in Vaginal Area

I have a question I hope someone can answer. About a year ago I had a sore outside of my vagina that was classified as a Herpes Type I (NOT gential herpes-- type II) Since then I have had only one other small outbreak (2 tiny sores). My question is how exactly does Type I invade the genital area, and what specifically causes it to occur (like stress?) My gynecologist hasn't given me any specifc information, nor can I find anything online about it. Also, how common is it? I am extremely prone to cankersores in my mouth, so I am assuming it is connected somehow.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!
