I am 50 years old with symptoms of menopause, the most severe being irritability and occasional night sweats. My FSH level is 85, which my gynocologist explained indicated that I should be through menopause and no longer be having periods. I have been taking 2.5 mgs of Provera to help with the regulation of the endometrial lining as I have the tendency to build a thick lining. My periods have been fairly regular,until the past few months when I began to skip and have periods farther apart,approximately 35-45 days. I was under the impression that one blood test is not definitive in diagnosing menopause. He is saying what I am experiencing is 'abnormal bleeding'. He did an SIS and found no polyps or fibroids and then preformed a uterine biopsy as he said my lining was approximately 8 mm thick, which he said he could not say was fine without a biopsy. He also mentioned he noticed one small ovarian cyst on each ovary. If I am truly 'through menopause' what would cause the lining of the uterus to continue to thicken as I understand that estrogen is required to promote it? He feels if the biopsy comes back fine he will watch for several months and if I continue to bleed ( even thought they seem to me to be 'perimenopausal type cycles', he will want to perform a D & C. I am confused and expressed this and he answered that he was too. I asked if I should continue with the Provera. He said to stop it for now as he was not sure I needed it. I am concerned that this will just allow the endometrium to thicken farther. Any input you can shed on this situation is very much appreciated.
