excessive menstruationFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netThu, 27 Feb 2003 23:30:48 -0600 (CST)
Background: extremely heavy period from June 30 2002 to Oct 15 2002. contacted GP early Aug 2002 and had bloodwork (low rbc and hormonal imbalance). pelvic ultrasound (results normal), referred to Ob/Gyn. Had pelvic exam May 2002 and on initial visit to Ob/Gyn early August. Both normal. Gyn recommended iron supplements (took approx.1 week and noticed a proportional increase in blood loss so stopped) and put on BC pills (orthotricycline). Took pills until early Sept 2002 with no change in mentruation. At this point was one month into the pills and experiencing EXTREME effects on mood to the point of violence. Called, described effects, Ob/gyn and was told not to expect a change in less than 2 months and to keep taking. I quit taking them at that point or rather family and roommates removed them. Stopped bleeding mid Oct, had one normal cycle, one skipped cycle, resumed bleeding again mid-Jan 2003 to present. Always had normal cycles up until this incident. Other possibly pertinent facts are had emergency gallbladder removal May 2002 and was put on Zoloft around the same time (prescribed before the surgery but didnt start taking until after). recently went in to see a Psychiatrist for the first time to start treating some depression that has been going on a LONG time. i have am probably still + more anemic that last time. I have been fixated/obsessed with eating ice since Sept 2002, something i found out while cruising the web this evening is associated with anemia. tired, dizzy, insomnia.
-- I am thinking if i find a gyn what will happen is they will work with me to hopefully find a pill that doesnt make me crazy so that hormones can get back to where they need to be. what i am unsure of is: i just started taking depression meds, might not be a good idea to start taking BC pills too? could the mental health be the cause of the imbalance in the first place and if so, if the cause is treated and gotten under control could the hormones then right themselves? or do hormones have to have an adjustment in order to change their balance once it has already been changed? most of the info i am finding refer to excessive menstruation occurring in teens and being chronic or occurring pre-menopause. I am 24.
