[Birth Control] birth control (Tri-Levlen)

I am on my first month of Tri-Levlen. I started on the day my period started which was a Sunday. I am due for my period in a few days and i am on my 3rd light green pill (the last row). Is my period supposed to start on the first few light green pills? If my period didn't start yet for the first few light green pills, am i still protected during sex while taking these? (these are the ones without the hormones). (not just for the first month, but all through out the process of taking them)

Also i heard that these pills without the hormones are just sugar pills and they are what cause you to gain weight. Is it okay to not take them at all and use another form of contraception during that week? Will that mess up my period in any way?
