How fast does ovarian cancer grow and what does it mean for me and my daughterFrom: EM (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 20 Feb 2003 03:17:08 -0600 (CST)
My mother had a normal well-woman exam in December. Now 2.5 months later she has advanced ovarian cancer. She had a hysterectomy in 1969 but kept ovaries. She is now almost 70. Her symptoms began in January and she lost weight, got severely bloated, all the classic symptoms. She had a colonoscopy five weeks ago that she thought was much more painful than previous, but it was normal. So now I am wondering about my risk level. My grandmother (mom's mom) died in October at age 91. I am 45, still menstruating. I have occasional ovarian cysts, most recently they were OK after being in BCPs. I had to quit the BCPs when I developed high blood pressure. There is no known history of breast or ovarian cancer on my mother's side of the family. How often should I be screened now? I also have fibroids and had a Uterine Artery Embolization 5 years ago, the fibroids aren't an issue now. But because of the UAE, I have had quite a few transvaginal uultrasounds as a followup. Do I need to see the gyn more often than annually? Insistg on ultrasounds? Also my daughter (15) was diagnosed with PCOS mainly on the basis of her menstrual history and all the classic PCOS symptoms. She is on Yasmin BCP now. What does all this mean for her?
