[Birth Control] Can Ortho tri cyclene cause consective menstrual cycles?

My girlfriend accidently lost one of her Ortho tri cyclene pills down the sink. It was the very last one before the placebo pills were to be taken. According to the directions that come with the ortho tri cyclene she is supposed to start a new set (cycle) of pills the day after she missed the pill (she missed saturday night and started the next pack on sunday night). The directions didn't say to use any other forms of birth control (so we aren't worried about that). She kind of figured she would miss her period because she started a new cylce... however she started her period at her normal time on wednesday and then it seemed to pretty much stop on monday. It started back up again (light flow) on Tuesday and it is now wednesday and she is still having her period. All of this is not remotely close to her usual cycle (she has been on ortho for 2 and half years). We were just wondering if this was something that is common or if she needs to get this checked out? if the period stops in a few days is that good? and should she start her period again when she is normally supposed to when she starts taking the placebo pills at the end of this cycle? Any insight would be appreciated... thanks so much.
