Heart disease is not always preventable. Many women do have risk factors and family history. Generally estrogen before menopause helps, but that isn't the case for everyone. If there is a strong family history, doing the proper things like diet and exercise and not smoking can help, but it doesn't guarantee that there won't be a problem. And a lot depends on when the person got "religion" as far as diet and exercise. If they ate a high fat diet as a kid, it was already known that fatty streaks are found in the arteries of kids. Also after menopause, the risk for heart disease goes up because of the lack of estrogen.
