progestin pills vs others

I am just wondering that why if progestin birth control pills have less side effects than the estrogen combo that is usually prescribed why more women and doctors do not use them before prescribing the others? Its rare that I hear of a woman on these progestin only pills. can a doctor give me their reasoning on this? I was only given info on them because I have a family history of blood clots that may make the other types dangerous for me but that was the first I had heard of them.
