[Birth Control] Ortho-Tri-Cyclen vs. Microgestin and DiabetesFrom: Alice (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 10 Feb 2003 21:06:33 -0500
I am an insulin dependent 36 year old diabetic woman. For a brief period, I was on OrthoTriCyclen (about a year and a half.) When I switched doctors, my second doctor took me off the Orthotricyclen due to safety concerns (age/diabetes). So I went to using condoms (and just living with a higher state of pregnancy paranoia) My insurance switched and now yet another doctor (doctor number three) has told me that some types of birth control pills are safe for me and a better idea than condoms due to increased effectiveness. She wants me to start taking Microgestin (which I understand is the same thing as Loestrin). I'm confused. If Ortho-Tri-Cyclen wasn't safe for me, why is Microgestin safer? I've done internet searches and found very little comparing the two versions of the pill for safety and nothing that adds diabetes and age to the equation. In addition, doc #3 has also prescribed an ACE inhibitor, Lisinopril (5mg) as a kidney damage preventive (I don't have high blood pressure) and I don't find a lot of info on interactions between the two (though she tells me the two are fine together). I'd appreciate any additional information you can give between the two pills.
