Effexor isn't addictive in the sense of heroin or cocaine. However, the brain does develop a dependence on it. There is a withdrawal.

I've been taking it for four years and I am currently withdrawing from 375mg a day. It will take me a total of three months to drop off of Effexor - dropping from 375 to 300 to 225 and so on every other week. At the same time I'm titrating up with Wellbutrin, which is helping take the edge off of the withdrawal, but it's still pretty rough.

Nothing eliminates the Effexor withdrawal - it's the worst anti-depressant for withdrawal, although Paxil comes in a close second, and Zoloft isn't far behind.

Hang in there - this too shall pass.
