Very rapid heartbeats & stress? Please answer - VERY SCARED!

I am a 31 year old female. I have been under an extreme amount of stress lately due to problems with my supervisors at work - so much so that I dread coming to work everyday and get tense upon arriving in the office.

In the past, when in a confrontational situation, my heart will beat very heavily and fast in my chest. This usually lasts for a minute or two during the confrontation and subsides afterwards.

Today, I became aware that another confrontation between me and my supervisor was going to occur due to some written feedback. Immediately upon reading this paper, my heart began to beat VERY rapidly and hard and I had some slight pain in my chest. When it didn't subside after a few minutes, I went to our company nurse. She checked my blood pressure at 135/73 (usually 120/70) and my pulse at 110 - note that initially both were probably substantially higher because it was beginning to slow. Told me it was stress and assured me that I was NOT having a heart attack. The whole episode lasted 5-10 minutes. I had pvcs for about 4 months a year ago and had a heart sonogram, and wore a monitor and all came back normal - just pvcs attributed to stress and/or a reaction to birth control medication.

I am afraid that rapid heartbeats could cause me to have a heart attack and don't know what to do. I can't remove myself from the situation yet, as I have not been able to find another job.

Are my rapid heartbeats a common response to stress? Can they lead to a heart attack when occurring? What can I do to get them under control?

Please help!! Very scared and worrying about this is causing more stress.

Thank you.
