Post partum hemorrhage and hysterectomy related to c sectionFrom: Marianne (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 7 Feb 2003 04:44:39 -0600 (CST)
Hi.I am 32 yrs old and suffered post partum hemorrhage after emergent csection post labor induction at 41 weeks. I have several questions: 1) How common is a laceration to the uterine artery? Is 'laceration' a loose term possibly implying a tear as well as a surgical laceration? 2) How would one go about repairing such an occurence? Other than surgically stitching it back up, are there other things that could be undertaken in such a case? Is a vascular surgeon someone who would be consulted to do such a thing or is an OB the person one would expect to repair this? 3) What is the blood flow (approx) to the uterine artery? I understand that the uterus is extremely vascular so I was curious as to what an approximation of blood flow would be? (my hemoglobin was 13.6 pre labor to 3.7 immediately post csection, they went through an extraordinary amount of lap pads in the O.R. while attempting repair (obviously unsuccessfully) and I was curious as to how quickly the blood flow would have to be to show a 10 Gms blood count drop in a matter of a couple hours. 4) Also, how common are bladder tears with regard to c-sec? Or are my circumstances extenuating and do not normally call for such a thing? 5) Could labor induction drugs (i.e. Pitocin) have had any effect on my outcome? It has been over a year and although I am fairly knowledgeable (I am an ICU nurse), I have never been too into OB topics until this has happened to me and am going through emotional turmoil as well as this overwhelming need for knowledge. Thank you in advance for any response. Marianne My story: http://www.geocities.com/mares1
