Re: A question about narcotics and general anesthesia for Nurse ClaudiaFrom: Cindy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 6 Feb 2003 16:34:20 -0600 (CST)
Hi Kristy, thought I'd add my 2 cents! I've had many surgeries, have had many procedures requiring conscious sedation and have taken a whole variety of pain meds. versed is more of a sedative and acts as an amnesiac, so that you are less likely to remember anything. you wake up and have only a vague impression that something was done. around here, for conscious sedation, docs will usually use something like demerol or fentanyl for pain and versed or valium for sedation for procedures like colonoscopies. demerol doesn't really take my pain away, it just makes me not care that I am in pain. which is just as good in some instances. :) different docs and different anesthesiologists are different in how and what you can take prior to surgery. I've never had to "go without" on the day of a surgery. I've sometimes had to change what I took and when I took it, tho. like Claudia said, sometimes taking pain meds for chronic pain can increase your tolerance to other pain meds, but not necessarily. it's really individualized. just don't be afraid to ask. are you going to have someone there with you to act as your advocate? I stongly suggest that you do. take care
