[Birth Control] How long until birth control is effective

I don't have a regular period - in one year, I may have 2. When I was 20 and first started taking the pill, I was told to wait a month before trusting that the pill would work as the birth control method. I recently went back on the pill after 3 years off. Now, my orthotricyclen instructions made some vague references to 7 days before the pill is effective. I cannot say that I started the Sunday after my last period because that was months ago, but I have been on the pill for 10 days. Is it safe to discontinue condom usage? PS - STDs are not an issue - I have been with the same partner for 9 years.

I didn't see any clear answer on this in the forum - I apologize for wasting your time if I missed it.

Thanks Shannon
