That "mass" is indeed the placenta, and it is quite common for there to be a small clot between the placenta and the uterine wall. It happened with my youngest son (now 3), and I have seen it any number of times in my patients. It usually does not progress from there, and gradually resolves over some weeks. It is also true that there is nothing you can do about it.
