Could pills cause birth defect? Reply: William McIntosh, MD: "Re: Could pills cause birth defect?" This probably has nothing to do with cyst problem that I have, but I just remembered what my mother said about my birth. Apparently mom used birth control pill that was past expiration date when she conceived me. She feared that I might have defects and considered abortion, but didn't do it (God bless her :)). I'm wondering if this could have affected my health. As far as I know, I've been healthy except for gum disease (very aggressive one, I had gum surgery)painful periods, and 5cm cyst that now I have that is causing all kinds of symtoms.
