Hi,

I have dysfunctional uterine bleeding (or so they tell me). I went 42 days straight with bleeding. My hemoglobin levels dropped continously through this time thus, anemia got worse and worse. This concerned my doctor.

After several phone conversations with my doctor and after having tried progesterone for 10 days, which didn't stop the bleeding, I saw my doctor last week. Since I was still bleeding (I assume), he didn't examine me. He said that the birth control pill would stop the bleeding. He put me on Ortho Novum 777. After three days on the pill, the bleeding finally stopped.

Though happy that the bleeding has stopped, I wonder just how (or if) putting me on the birth control pill tells the doctor the cause of my DUB. Is this a diagnostic measure, and if so how so, or does it simply just stop the problem without determining what the cause of the problem is and thus, I'm only masking the problem with medication.

Thanks
