contraceptives for 4 weeks?

My doctor said that instead of taking my nuvaring out for the 4th week (and subsequently getting my period) I could leave it in during the 4th week, then immediately start on a new ring at the beginning of the 5th week (with no rest peiod in between). This is supposed to lessen my chances of getting a period while still preventing pregnancy. It sounds safe, but I was just wondering if others agree and if so, does it work for preventing menstruation?
