Re: Why are pap smears necessary for virgins? From: Anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 16 Dec 2002 09:26:52 -0600 (CST)

I'm not nor have been sexually active, and 3. >>Frankly, like most women I presume, I'd rather not unless necessary! Personally, a ten minute exam is less scary to me than DYING from a cancer that could be cured if found early (several women in my family have had cancer early in life). Also, when you have an exam, the pap smear is not all they do. They can find cysts, enlarged uterus or other problems that may cause no symptoms - and virgin or not, you are not immune to problems, especially as you become less the "spring chicken." At 30 (not so much a spring chicken myself lol), hysterectomy behind me but ovaries left behind :), I still plan to go for yearly exams. My life is too important to me not to. My best advice is to talk to female friends who have a gyn they like. Make an appointment with that GYN for a consult. Go in, talk to them about the benefits, your concerns and the like. Then, make another appointment if you are comfortable with the gyn for an exam. If you are not comfortable, find another gyn and do the same until you find one you like, you can trust and you are comfortable with. My gyn is the absolute best doctor I've ever seen in my life! He is easy to talk to, easy to look at heh heh, caring, concerned and takes the time to answer my questions. May everyone be so lucky to find wonderful doctors.
