Fibroid pressure possibly causing kidney damage

I have a fibroid that compresses my bladder and causes some renal pelvic swelling when my bladder is full. My doctor has talked to me about hysterectomy but I am not experiencing any great discomfort and have concerns about how the hysterectomy will affect my life. I do not want to damage my kidney, however. I am 50 yrs old and am probably perimenopausal. Menopause could still be a year or so off. I haven't seen much on the web about the dangers of fibroid pressure causing damage to the ureter? How effective is it to periodically monitor the health of the kidney or does the risk of damage increase greatly over time even if the fibroid doesn't change much in size?
