Re: usa vs the rest of the worldFrom: Kristy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 29 Nov 2002 23:08:55 -0800 (PST)
Dr. Cristalli, She's talking about a pelvic exam every 12 months not just the pap smear. So now I have a few questions for you. If the standard for a pap is every 3 years for if the pap is normal does this also include that pelvic exam? Also, for someone that has a lot of problems healthwise in the female area is every 3 years for a pap and a pelvic exam still the standard? The reason I ask is b/c that is still being debated here in the U.S. The American Cancer Society has said that if the first three paps are normal then the woman can have a pap every 3 years but the other side of the coin is from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists that says that a woman should have a pap smear every year regardless. The reasoning for this is that anything can happen during that time, and if a woman has cancer and it is not noticed until her next pap in 3 years it may be too late to treat it. Also, I know that some insurance companies will cover a pap and pelvic every year any way as part of the well-woman visit. Thanks for your help. ===== Kristy :) http://www.geocities.com/sokokl/kristyspersonalpage.html I am a Medical Secretary who does a lot of learning from reading on the Net, books, my dr(s), as well as sharing my own personal experiences.
