Excessive Appetite & Weight Gain - Very ConcernedFrom: Lyn (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 13 Nov 2002 07:51:23 -0600 (CST)
I am a 31 year old female who is being treated for iron-deficiency anemia due to heavy menstrual cycles. I have been taking Niferex (liquid iron supplement) for approximately 4 months to treat this condition and have been told to stay on it until March of 2003 (9 months in total). I have noticed recently that I have put on approximately 15 pounds (mostly around the abdominal area) and I have a much increased appetite. At times, it seems I cannot eat fast enough and I have had an increased craving for sweets (chocolate, cookies, etc) that I have NEVER had before. Until recently the only time I would crave chocolate would be just before the start of my period - now it seems like I want it all the time. I am also on Synthroid for hypothyroidism, Clarinex & Rhinocort Aqua for allergies. Can any of these medications be causing the weight gain and increased appetite/craving for food? I am beginning to worry about my weight gain and increased need for foods, especially sweets. I have gained weight on the iron supplement before (I have taken many times on & off for the anemia), but this is the first time I have experienced the food cravings. Please help! I look forward to hearing from you.
