Is the weight gain permanent because I no longer have my >ovaries??--Concerned Judy, Doctors say there is no reason why you would gain weight after a hysterectomy, except for inactivity and aging, which doesn't apply to you. What do you mean by "eating healthy"? Are you sure you are not eating more than before? I would also have your doctor check your thyroid. (quick blood test). A while back I read an article that suggested that women who endured long periods for years actually used up a lot of calories. Once they had a hysterectomy their bodies didn't need the calories and they gained weight while eating the same. This doesn't seem to be true based on my experience. I lost weight after hysterectomy despite a history of long and heavy periods. I did find that my food preferences changed after hysterectomy. I ate a high carb diet before and now I crave less carbs and fat and eat more protein.
