Response to Maggie from BeckyFrom: Becky (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 30 Oct 2002 14:00:45 -0600 (CST)
Maggie, Thanks for writing back. I had normal paps (did em every year) until 1997, and it came out either mild dysplasia or atypical (can't remember). So I had a colpo which showed carcinoma in situ (CIS), then the cold knife cone a month later in 1997 still and the report was clear (edges of the cervix cone taken out were free of cancer). An ob/gyn told me the next year I should be "cured" of the cancer and no worries after that. No further abnormal paps. Then 2002 October rolls around and I get this atypical squamous cells pap report back. This time my pap was done by thin prep ( good method of preventing cell clumping, and getting a better sample of the cervical cells.) All the other times I had regular paps done without the thin prep method or pap net method(another commercial pap test- using computer to read pap also). My theory in all this is prior to 1997 (since cervical cancer is slow growing) is that prior paps done were most likely showing signs of dysplasia, ect in year(s) past, it just wasn't found until 1997(hence the 30% failure rate of paps to find problems). So it was a shock to me to see I had already advanced to CIS in one years time! That's why I think previous paps were just missed. So Maggie, that's it in a BIG nutshell. Sorry so wordy. Hope this sheds some light.
-- Becky
