I posted the following question several days ago and, as far as I can tell, there was no reply. I ask your indulgence as I try once more. If there is no answer this time, I will assume no one here knows the answer and I will look somewhere else. Thank you for your patience, but I need to verify this statement or I can't use it in my article . . .

I am an author doing research for an article. One of my sources made a statement that I am trying to verify. The statement is:

"Prior to 1960, there were no known sexually transmitted viruses. All known sexually transmitted diseases prior to that date were bacterial."

Can you verify the statement or point me to any source on the web, or elsewhere, that would either confirm or refute that statement?
