Finding The Right Ovary via UltrasoundFrom: Curious (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 7 Oct 2002 11:04:41 -0500 (CDT)
Abdominal CT scan revealed cyst on left ovary of 10 years post menopause woman. 1st abdominal and transvaginal ultrasound (July) done with patient positioned flat. Markedly enlarged left ovary, simple cyst 5.1 x 4.14 x 4.3 cm. Right ovary unseen. 2nd abdominal and transvaginal ultrasound (August) done with patient's bottom propped up on 6"or so foam rubber block. Tech uses free hand to manipulate abdomen to shift internal organs. Right ovary found with cystic structure. Left ovarian cyst somewhat larger but still appears to be simple cyst. 3rd ultrasound (October) done with patient flat for abdominal and bottom propped up on foam rubber block for transvaginal. New equipment, supposedly with all the bells and whistles included, utilized. Company reps still working with tech to familiarize her with new equipment for this third set of ultrasounds. Despite repeated and lengthy attempts right ovary not found. Left ovarian cyst still appears to be simple cyst but somewhat larger. Three different techs for the 3 sets of ultrasounds. Only tech doing second set of ultrasounds utilized her free hand to manipulate the abdomen. None of the three had patient roll to one side and/or the other to help shift and re-distribute the internal organs. Any suggestions for positioning, moving or manipulating to enhance the finding of that right ovary and getting further information on the apparent cyst size and appearance that patient can offer or suggest to the tech??
