Hi, it's me again (Mel) I have had the "THIN PREP" Pap done in the last few years. Supposedly it is more accurate, I believe it captures the cells in a liquid which makes it more accurate. I believe that the test to determine HPV Virus infection doesn't have a special name. My doctor suspected I must have the HPV Virus (I assume because of my problem pap smears in the past year) and he told me a few months ago he would get the HPV test to determine TYPE of HPV. (They use a THIN PREP Pap Smear to do the HPV Tes also). He said that if I had one of the aggressive, high-risk Types (such as 16, 18) then he would follow me even more closely than someone with the less risky types, because having the High Risk HPV just means the abnormal cells could turn more aggressive. He said that I would have to be vigilant and not skip any Pap Smears (Not that I would ever do that! I have always been very vigilant on that!) Turned out I did have the high-risk Types (he said the lab can't tell which ones exactly, just that they are in that high-risk category)

But I guess the main thing is, if you have regular Paps, the doctor should be able to detect bad cells, and destroy them, so that you don't get cancer. If you don't like your doctor, then think about changing doctors. That is what I would do if I felt uncomfortable with mine. I currently have a male doctor I like a lot, but some women feel better about a woman doctor. Do whatever you need to do to feel like you've investigated your options.... if you feel that you want a Thin Prep Pap done, make sure and do it. A few years ago my insurance wouldn't cover Thin Prep's added expense (now they do) so I paid it myself. (I think it was under $80)

Good luck and write back if you want! Mel
