irregular periodsFrom: Kathy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 26 Sep 2002 14:57:53 -0500 (CDT)
Approximately 7 years ago, I was diagnosed with "proliferative endometrium" after an endometrial biopsy. My periods were about 15 days apart, lasting for 10 days. My doctor put me on hormones for several months, and they increased the time between periods to about 22-26 days. My doctor said this was considered normal. I stopped taking the hormones, and everything has stayed about the same until now. For the last several months, I have felt a pressure in my pelvic area, and some sharp pains in my vagina. I constantly feel like I am going to start my period. Last month, there were 14 days between my periods. My doctor did another endometrial biopsy, but he said that he was not able to get into my uterus; there appeared to be something blocking the way; he thought fibroids. He said my uterus was enlarged to about 6 weeks. He gave me some natural progesterone, told me that he wanted me to have a transuterine and transvaginal sonogram, and come back in 6 weeks. He called me and said that the biopsy showed no cancer or pre-cancerous cells. I went and had the sonogram. The technician said that she saw no fibroids, and that everything including my ovaries looked good. Now I am so confused. My symptoms matched those that I have read of fibroids almost to a tee. Could the technician be performing the sonogram incorrectly? If so, will the radiologist be misled with an inaccurately done test? Can the biopsy that the doctor performed be accurate if he could not get into my uterus? And if there are no fibroids, why would he not be able to? What else could cause my symptoms?
