Re: covery from HysterectomyFrom: D.N. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 26 Sep 2002 13:34:21 -0500 (CDT)
Hi, I am not a doc, but I have had a hysterectomy. Depending on if they do the surgery vaginally or go through the abdomen will make some difference. The recovery time for any type of major surgery is usually 6-8 weeks if there are no complications- and everybody is different. If they do the surgery vaginally, from what I have heard, women tend to feel better a little more quickly. If it an incision in the abdomen it is slower because of all the cutting that has to be done and it is a good size incision. She will be sore for quite some time. The initial 2 weeks are probably the worst. She won't be able to drive for I think about 2-3 weeks after the surgery. I can't remember exactly, but roughly about that time. No lifting anything heavier than a container of milk for some time either. No vacuuming, heavy cleaning -I can't remember exactly how many weeks. I am assuming because of her age she has already gone through menopause, so she won't have the hormonal fluctuations that accompany removal of the ovaries. Some women feel back to normal about 3 months after surgery, others it can take longer. I was 36 (7 years ago) when I had mine and I had complications it took me over a year, but that is the exception, not the rule. After she is healed she should be able to get back to her normal life. I hope this helps. Best wishes to both you and your wife,
-- D.N.
