Re: [Birth Control] rhythm methodFrom: offpill (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 26 Sep 2002 10:51:12 -0500 (CDT)
Unless you have very short cycles, the first 5 days of your cycle (first day being day 1) is considered safe. That said, if you are interesting in Natural Family Planning or Fertility Awareness, you should study the method thoroughly before using it. These methods involve observations of cervical mucus and basal body temperatures. With educated, committed use, these methods can be quite effective. But if you absolutely don't want to get pregnant, then you should consider all days before you ovulate, including 48 hours afterward as time when you could potentially get pregnant, or use a near fail safe method (97-99%) like the combined birth control pill. Not sure if this is what you were asking about but I thought I'd clarify. (sperm rarely lives 7 days, usually 2-5 in ideal conditions.) Not a doc. Practices NFP
