Even from nurses I've heard rather insubstantial recommendations (he's funny, cute ,etc), but in general they are good sources. If you know any doctors personally, they are an even better source. Some of the ones I know socially have been very honest about their peers. I have not found my primary care doctor to be a reliable source of good referrals, but that's only my experience.
