Abnormal pap, and colposcopy

I've had two abnormal paps in July and August, and I just had a colposcopy done yesterday, and as soon as the doctor had turned off the lights and begun to look at my cervix he said I had an area that had precanerous cells. The doctor then took a biopsy off the left side of my cervix. Is it possible to determine that the cells are precancerous before sending the biopsy to the lab or what? After finishing the exam he said that either they would do a Leep or freeze the cells. The results are supposed to be in a week, but I was just confused about it. Thank you.
