painful vaginal sonogram

I just had a saline infusion sonogram that could not be completed due to excruciating pain with insertion of the probe after the saline infusion. There was also bleeding due to this. What could cause this? The GYN did not have any idea about the pain and did not offer me an alternative way to diagnose the post menopausal bleeding. Can you suggest possible causes and some possible other ways to diagnose the bleeding?
