The BCP is the mainstay of treating the pain and bleeding of PMS, and when they fail, the options otherwise are limited. SSRIs, like Prozac and Zoloft have been shown to be useful (no, this is not a "it's all in your head" thing, it just works), though they are really better for the mood swings, hot flushes, sleep disturbances and so on. If you are finished with your child bearing, then something like an endometrial ablation can do a good job. Since both of you are currently childless, that may not be an option that you care to explore.
