'Pouch' after hysterectomy (doctor response please)From: Norma (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 18 Sep 2002 08:56:31 -0500 (CDT)
Does every woman end up with a permanant "pouch" after hysterectomy? Friends who were very fit and trim before surgery have it. Can you explain why this does or does not occur (i.e. surgical technique, etc). I have been considering a hysterectomy for fibroids which are causing bothersome symptoms, and have consulted a few gynecologists for opinions, but none have mentioned this as a drawback when the pro/cons are discussed. I consider this a real negative "side effect" if it always occurs, and I would probably decide to try to wait out the fibroid problem until menopause or other treatment options are perfected. And why aren't doctors more forthcoming if this result is inevitable? It's quite unfair to the patient.
