Re: ovarian cyst?From: Curious (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 13 Sep 2002 05:26:28 -0500 (CDT)
If it helps any, at 40 you may be in perimenopause, when its not unusual for your cycles and ovaries and hormones to get a little mixed up. We normally form a simple (functional) cyst on an ovary at menses, its part of the normal cycle. I am 60, 10 years past menopause. CT scan found an apparent simple cyst on one ovary, unusual after menopause, but not at all unknown. Ultrasounds also indicate it is a simple cyst (of course no guarantees it is simple). Because I also have Crohn's disease I made an appt at Cleveland Clinic. They have a gyn/onco there whose special interest is gyn problems in women w/Crohn's disease. I know that most of the literature you find on the net says little about ovarian cysts in menopausal women except that a laparascoy should be done. BUT, if you look hard enough you will find that the latest advice is to adopt a wait and see approach. The usual recommendation is ultrasounds at 3 months, 3 months, 6 months, 6 months, one year and annually thereafter as long as there is no change. This was the same recommendation as my local gyn so I am following their advice.
The fact that you have pain tho would cause me to be more proactive if I
were you. You are the one experiencing the pain not your doctors or
their staff. Push harder and good luck and God bless.
