return of period after depo

I had my first and last depo shot 9/1/01. I had heavy bleeding during the first month of use with excessive clotting. Then my period ceased. To date I have not had a normal period. I spotted for 3 days in January 2002 about 5 days in April 2002 and one day at the end of June 2002. My ob/gyn has repeatedly stated this is normal post depo and that my period should return to normal within 10 months. I used depo for about 18 months several years ago my periods ceased during use. My periods returned within one month of stopping and I became pregant within 3 months. In June 2002 the ob/gyn ordered thyroid tests which returned normal. At the beginning of July she recommended 10mg Provera for 10 days. To date my period has not returned. At my last call to the ob/gyn the recommended 10mg Provera 2x per day for 10 days. At this point I am wondering whether or not we should be finding out WHY I am not having my period rather than trying another round of hormones. Perhaps I should just continue to wait it out and see if it starts, which leads me to my next question. What do I do about birth control. I do not want become pregnant. However, I need to either start Birth Control Pills or have an IUD inserted (both requires my having my period first) or continue to use a condom (which presents a psychological barrior for my husband)so I need to determine my birth control options. Any suggestions?
