A puzzling discharge problemFrom: Ann (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 18 Aug 2002 16:38:20 -0500 (CDT)
I have been experiencing a continuous clear-whitish discharge since ~8 weeks after the birth of my son (now 18 months of age).In addition, there is some itching/irritation and painful intercourse (on entry and on movement-kind of like sandpaper.) I have seen my regular OBGYN and we have tried numerous solutions. I have tried different birth control pills, which I no longer take. I was treated for bacterial vaginosis. I've taken Flagyl, Zithromax, Amoxicillin--all with no help. My OBGYN did see ulcerations on the vaginal wall, which he thought might be lichen planus. So we tried corticosteroid suppositories. This probably helped the most. The irritation went away and as long as I used the suppositories the discharge went away, however after treating for ~ 2 months, the discharge returned. (I have also had a "patch test" done by the dermatologist to see if there was an allergy-this was negative.) The ulcerations are now gone, but the itching periodically returns. Cultures continue to show high white cell counts and PH imbalance. Nothing abnormal is ever found. In June, both my regular OBGYN and I decided we needed further input and I have seen a specialist in vulvar disorders. So now I am being treated with Vagifem to try to balance everything. The discharge continues however. Some days the discharge is light and others it just "gushes" with no particular pattern (I am keeping a discharge diary). I am at my wit's end. Some days depression is a factor. It also affects our sex lives. Does anyone have any new ideas of what this could be?? Any input would be helpful. Thank you Ann
