Re: PrometriumFrom: D.N. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 6 Aug 2002 19:55:55 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Sarah, As BJ said, Prometrium is a natural estrogen derived from yams. I have been on it before for reasons other that what you have described. At one time, I was on two pills/day (trying to stop ovulation), but it caused depression. It may not do that for you at all because being perimenopausal, you aren't making all that much yourself. Is your doc having you take the Prometrium everyday or just certain days of the month? If it is just certain days, he is trying to get you to have a period because you aren't ovulating and building up more endometrial lining because of the unopposed estrogen (no ovulation=no progesteroneirregular, sometimes heavy periods) If it were me, I would try the Prometrium first and see if that makes a difference in your PMS symptoms. (If you decide to try this way, let your doctor know) Might take a month or two. You may find that Prometrium is all you need. If it doesn't help, add the Prozac. Personally, I tried Prozac at one time and had bad side-effects. I hope this helps. Best wishes, D.N.
