This could very well be an endometrioma instead of a dermoid. They are dificult to distinguish on Ultrasound. All US can really tell us is that there is something there that is solid and cystic. They are guessing that it is a Dermoid. Whichever it is, it should be removed so it really doesn't matter that much except if you have recurrent endometriosis, you probably should have both ovaries out as well as a hysterectomy.

Dr. says I also have uterine fibroids, which was >surprising since I have fairly regular periods and have not experienced

If you don't want to mess around with them and have a good chance of having another surgery in 5 years or so, then it isn't. But it is probably the best thing to do.

Probably the Best thing to do that has the least chance (NOT NO chance, but least) of having serious problems later.

Good to be calling YOUR Doctor for discussion.
