I don't think you're paranoid. All of the prior studies on hormone replacement (and birth control I might add) were conducted by the pharmaceutical industry. These studies are usually based on a small sample size of women, usually a few hundred. If a study yields a poor outcome, the pharmacuetical companies are NOT required legally to release those results. If they did, you can predict what would happen to their stock price. The latest study, conducted by the government, covered several thousand women , and there was a study requirement a priori to halt the study (and report) if adverse results were found.

The FDA (unlike the SEC, which does not have a sufficient budget)generally does a good job of regulation. However, there has been more pressure in recent years to rush drugs to market, and consumers are not blameless in that. Aside: I hope that you are not employed by one of the 18 companies now identified as using corrupt accounting practices. I truly hope criminal penalties are imposed on those people to send a message. I think outside of that, the market will recover sooner than later, and I hope you are young enogh to reap those rewards.
