Re: Thank you Sue and SAFE drugsFrom: R. Daniel Braun, MD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 10 Jul 2002 10:30:47 -0500 (CDT)
There is no such thing as a SAFE drug. They all have side effects. If someone tells you that theire is no risk to taking any drug, don't believe them. The STOPPED study from the WHI Showed that there were A. 8 more breast cancers/10,000 women in the study group. B. 8 more strokes/10,000 women in the study group C. 7 more heart attacks/10,000 women in the study group D. 6 fewer colorectal cancers/10,000 women in the study group E. 5 fewer hip fractures/10,000 women in the study group. Notice, these were all per 10,000 women. Add the words "than in the placebo group" to the end of each of the points above. The study didn't go on long enough to answer the question of cases of Alzheimer's/ 10,000. The study didn't look at number of days missed from work because of estrogen deficiency symptoms. The study did show NO difference in DEATH rates in the study and placebo groups. If you are at high risk for colorectal cancer and hip fracture while being at low risk for heart attack, breast cancer and stroke, Then Prempro might be a good idea. If the reverse, it might not be.
