'Standard Days' Birth Control Method or CycleBeadsFrom: Christine (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 10 Jul 2002 07:46:24 -0500 (CDT)
After reading the recent thread on the rhythm method and how unreliable it is, I was wondering what the docs here think about the "new" Standard Days method of contraception. A few weeks ago, it made big news on TV and it seems, if one has a regular cycle, it is about 95% effective. The theory is, if you have a 26-32 day menstrual cycle (i.e., you are very regular), you can have unprotected sex on days 1-7 and days 19-32 of your cycle. They even have a beaded necklace you can buy to monitor your days if you don't want to mess with tracking a calendar. I have not asked my doc about it yet, but it sounds pretty good for someone like me who is sensitive to hormones, sensitive to spermicide, and sensitive to lubricated condoms. I think I'm pretty responsible in that I can abstain on days 8 through 18, and my cycle has always been 29 days long ever since I was 13! So what do you think? Christine
