breast abscess?From: Lisa (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 6 Jul 2002 11:22:54 -0500 (CDT)
3 days ago I developed mastitis, my temp went up to 104, and after taking a dicloxicillin (500mg) I began vomiting for most of the night. The following day my fever went up and down, and the midwife I spoke to wouldn't prescribe anything different, so I decided to try self treatment. (I'm not sure if the vomiting was from the medication or the illness) The following day after that, it spiked back up to 104 again, and a different midwife called in a prescription for ampicillin. I took the first one at dinner time, the second one at bedtime and my third one this morning. I still have a fever (72 hours now) and the redness in my breast has traveled up to the top of my breast. I also have swelling in my lymph node. I guess my question is how long do I give it on the antibiotics before the fever should go down, and does this sound like it could be an abscess? It is incredibly painful, and there is a darkened area around the base of the nipple and an area which looks bruised on the side of my breast. I'm trying to decide whether I need further medical care as I have been very very sick with this. Thanks
